LBQS 1429-0053: a binary quasar rather than a lensed quasar
نویسنده
چکیده
Very deep ESO/VLT FORS1 and ISAAC images, as well as HST NICMOS2 data are used to infer the nature of the quasar pair LBQS 1429-0053 A and B, either a binary quasar or a doubly-imaged lensed quasar. Direct search of a putative lensing galaxy is unsuccessful down to R=27, J=24, Ks=22.5 and H=22.5. Moreover, no galaxy overdensity close to the quasar pair is found. A weak shear analysis of the FORS1 R-band 6.8′ ×6.8′ field also fails at detecting any concentration of dark matter more massive than σ=500 km s and weakens the hypothesis of a dark lens. The only sign of a possible lens consists in a group of 5 objects having colors consistent with galaxies at z∼1, within a radius of 5′′ from the quasar pair. Considering this group as the lensing potential does not allow to reproduce the image position and flux ratio of LBQS 1429-0053 A and B. Our deep R-band image shows a blue, previously unknown, extended object at the position of LBQS 1429-0053 A, which is consistent with either being the lensed quasar A host, or being an intervening galaxy at lower redshift. Unless future very deep optical images demonstrate that this object is actually the lensed host of LBQS 1429-0053, we conclude that there is very little evidence for LBQS 1429-0053 being lensed. Therefore, we are led to declare LBQS 1429-0053 A and B a genuine binary quasar.

LBQS 0103−2753 is a binary quasar with a separation of only 0.3 arcsec. The projected spacing of 2.3 kpc at the distance of the source (z = 0.848) is much smaller than that of any other known binary QSO. The binary nature is demonstrated by the very different spectra of the two components and the low probability of a chance pairing. LBQS 0103−2753 presumably is a galaxy merger with a small phys...

Deep HST/NICMOS H (F160W) band observations of the z = 1.96 quasar pair Q 1634+267A,B reveal no signs of a lens galaxy to a 1σ threshold of ≃ 22.5 mag. The minimum luminosity for a normal lens galaxy would be a 6L * galaxy at z ≃ 0.5, which is 1000 times greater than our detection threshold. Our observation constrains the infrared mass-to-light ratio of any putative, early-type, lens galaxy to ...

Imaging and spectroscopy with HST show that LBQS 0103−2753 (V = 17.8, z = 0.848) is a binary quasar with a separation of 0 .3 or 2.3 kpc. This is by far the smallest separation binary quasar reported to date. The two components have very different spectra, including the presence of strong broad absorption lines (BALs) in component A only. The emission-line redshifts, based on the broad high ion...

We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) data on the large-scale environments of 16 0.39 < z < 0.51 quasars from the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS). The LBQS quasars are representative of the radio-quiet population, and this is the first look at their large-scale environments. We compare the LBQS environments with the environments of 27 0.15 < z < 0.55 q...
متن کاملTwo Close–Separation Quasar–Quasar Pairs in the Large Bright Quasar Survey
We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of two close quasar– quasar pairs found in the Large Bright Quasar Survey (LBQS) (Hewett et al. 1995, AJ, 109, 1498). The two components of the 2153-2056 pair (z = 1.845, ∆θ = 7. 8, B = 17.9 and 21.3) have the same redshifts within the relatively large uncertainty, ∆vA−B = −1100±1500 km s, of the observations. The quasars are most likely spa...
